It’s no surprise that picture books are my jam. Picture books about gratitude? Okay, now you’re really speaking my language! This post is going live in December. Why does that matter? As a culture, we tend to focus on gratitude in fall, November, and around Thanksgiving. While this is so fun and a great way to highlight such an important virtue, gratitude is something we need to cultivate across the entire year. These picture books about gratitude aren’t seasonally exclusive and will allow you to embed them across your school year seamlessly.
1.) May We Have Enough to Share by Richard Van Camp
This book is so sweet. I love how each page touches on the connections we have with nature and how gratitude comes in the natural world, too.
2.) Gratitude is My Superpower by Alicia Ortego
Betsy uses her magic stone to help her better remember and understand the big and small things she should give thanks for. I love how this book touches on physical items to be grateful for, but also the things others (like parents) do for us everyday.
3.) The Thankful Book by Todd Parr
Todd Parr’s books are best sellers because they are simple and accessible. This one is no exception! Each page shares big and small things that we can be grateful for. This book would be a perfect example for students to replicate with what they’re thankful for!
4.) When Grandma Gives You a Lemon Tree by Jamie LB Deenihan
This book is a creative and sweet twist to the saying, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade”. This isn’t one of the most direct pictures book about gratitude, but I do think it’s a realistic way to chat about the times showing and having gratitude can be challenging. Like, if you were to get a lemon tree for your birthday?! Learn how she overcomes this perplexing situation and learns a lot along the way.
5.) Apple Cake by Dawn Casey
This book is the most fun read aloud, for both kids and adults! The rhyming nature makes it fun and whimsical, and as you travel through the pages, you’ll be able to bake along with the characters using the apple cake recipe in the back!
